The Metamorphosis

The Metamorphosis novel is written by Franz Kafka. This famous novel is a masterpiece in modern literature, and it was published in 1915. It presents human loneliness, family relationship weakness, and existential crisis. It covers not only physical appearance changing but also the whole society’s moral picture.

The modern human restlessness and failure of the family structure reflect the emotional feelings. It criticizes the individual’s extinguishedness in society and relational apathy. The story presents to everyone who loses identity because of society’s fear and pressure. It reminds us that the biggest ever punishment for humans is to be ignored and lonely. These feelings of loneliness and ignoring kill a living human.

The Metamorphosis Summary

The novel opens with an unexpected incident. In part 1, Gregor Samsa is the protagonist of this PDF book. He gets up early in the morning and finds himself converted into a monstrous insect. He does take care of his job and responsibilities instead of taking care of his appearance.

Her family knocks on the door to go to work, but they are not aware of his monstrous insect appearance. Gregor is totally speechless and is unable to tell his family about his condition. On his Chief Clerk’s arrival, he blamed Gregor for not working well. Gregor opens the door and reveals his face. Chief ran out from there, and Gregor’s father put him in the room, where he was injured, and his loneliness started from there.

In the 2 parts of the novel, with the passage of time, Gregor adjusts to his new body. He learns to crawl on the wall and the roof, and his sister takes care of him. He started eating insect food. On the other hand, the family is facing a financial crisis. His mother and sister work to run home. Gregor is now completely alone and hides himself whenever they come into the room.

He is totally worried about the family’s unstable financial condition and feels guilty himself. He remembers his human life. One night, his sister plays singing, and Gregor comes out from his room. The lodgers wonder, and Grete consoles them to finish Gregor’s worm.

In 3-part Gregor thinks about himself and considers suicide. His presence is a burden for his family. In the morning, he was found dead, and the maid threw him out of the home. Gregor’s family feels good, and they all start living a happy life. Grete is now young, and her parents begin considering her marriage.

Core Theme and Analysis of The Metamorphosis

The core theme of this novel is loneliness, family exploitation, social injustice, and human identity. Gregor, who is already clutched in a job, is the only source of earning for this family. After converting his appearance, he has totally disappeared from his family structure. He leads his entire life alone and meets death.

Being an individual source of income for this family, he is not able to work for the family. In this situation, the family should decide to stand with him, but his family ignores him badly as he is not a member of this family. His family becomes cruel, and her sister’s attitude is also inhuman.

Having worms, Gregor thinks like a human. His parents, including his sister Grete, become inhuman. In the beginning, Grete loves and takes care of her brother. Gregor was making money and was fed up with his family; now fate has turned him into an insect. His fate reveals the parents’ love as well sister.

The novel also shows the economic injustice and criticizes the capitalist system. Humans are valued by their work and money. It shows when Gregor is dead, and his family becomes happy.

Characters Analysis

Gregor Sama:

Gregor Sama is the protagonist of the novel The Metamorphosis. In the beginning, he is a responsible son and does a job to run the family. He is respected for earning and feeding up their family. After converting into an insect, he becomes emotional and a burden on his parent,s including his sister. After his death, his parents feel good to start their normal life again. His character presents responsibility.

Grete Sama:

Greta Sama plays a positive and negative role as being sister. She is the only person who takes care of Gregor when he converts into an insect. Cleaning his room and feeding him shows her humanity towards Gregor. After some period of time, Grete is fed up with Gregor and separates herself.

Mr. & Mrs. Samsa:

Gregor’s parents are angry in the novel they start hating after the appearance changes. Samsa beats Gregor and imprisons him in the room. His character shows power in the home and maintains superiority. He does not even take care during Gregor’s disease. Gregor’s mother is very sensitive and becomes worried. Being a mother, her character shows helplessness in front of social pressure.

The Chief Clerk & Lodgers:

Chief Clerk is the boss of Gregor. He visits when Gregor does not come to work. By seeing him in an insect appearance, he returns. 

His characters show how a man is treated like a machine. In human appearance, Gregor was good, but in his bad times, everyone left him alone. Now he is not able to work but is rejected by the chief clerk. 

The lodgers also wonder to see Gregor in an insect-like appearance. Their character presents to those who ignore others during times of hardship.
