Summary of the art of war

- The art of war contains the practical strategy of war and is divided into chapters. The first chapter starts with planning. Sun Tzu focuses on the enemy’s weakness and improves your power against the enemy.

Success depends upon five elements, including moral law, weather conditions, geographical conditions, capabilities of leadership and discipline of the army. Preparing for war without planning is a direct invitation to death.

- In the second, Sun discussed the war costs. War is not cheap; humanity faces challenges not only financially but also loss of human lives. A long period of war weakens the state, and it should end as soon as possible. Public support helps in winning the war.

- Sun Tzu believes in depriving the enemy of war capability. To win against the enemy, demolish its resources and separate its allies. Save yourself from unnecessary war.

- The actual commander is in a defensive position. Sun Tzu believes in allowing the enemy to attack on weak points, but you should keep your strong position. Be patient and wait for the right time.

- The power of the military is not limited to numbers, but it is hidden in movement and flexibility. Sun believes the military should be used in such a way that it could react in any emergency. It has the capacity to weaken the enemy, confusing them in expected attacks.

- The first attack should be on the enemy’s weak point. Sun quotes a famous Hide your power and reveal enemy weakness. Your enemy should not be aware of where you will attack.

- Sometimes a straightforward attack on the enemy could be dangerous. Sun Tzu focuses on putting the enemy in a confused situation and removing their attention. After removing attention, attack them. The actual war is fought in the mind of the enemy.

- There is no single strategy that could work forever in war. Strategy changes according to the situation, and it should be changed. Move back if the enemy is strong, and if weak, then you should attack. A flexible strategy is the key to success.

- The movement of the military should be as per the enemy’s movement. The army analyses rivers, forests and the mountains. It is famously said that the enemy can be weakened by taking them away on difficult ground.

- Every land has its importance due to the military. Sun Tzu has divided lands into different parts from a military advantage point of view. He says some lands are better for defence and some are better for attacking.

- SunTzu has described different conditions of war, and each one needs a different strategy. Don’t fight where the military is shattered, and don’t take early decisions where it is hard to move back. Show crafty where opponents are in a good position.

- Sun Tzu focused on fire during the war. He has described the importance of destroying the enemy’s weapons, camps and warehouses. He also warns that this astonishing method can be dangerous for both, so use it carefully.

- Espionage is an important weapon in war. He says if you know your enemy and yourself, then you will never go to war. The spy method has been used for many years, and it is considered one of the best ways to keep an eye on enemies.
