Plot Summary

Tom Sawyer is an adventurous protagonist of this novel. The story begins when Tom is given the task of cleaning the garden fence. 

He does not like work himself, but he completes the work of other children and receives toys and trinkets from them.

Soon, Tom fell in love with Becky, the daughter of a Justice. Both times pass with each other, and both are ready for engagement. 

When Becky learned about Tom’s ex-love involvement, she started making excuses and refused to have a conversation with him.

Tom goes to the cemetery with his friend Huckleberry Finn, where he gets a chance to see a strange incident. A dreadful incident occurred there; in response, both were frightened. 

A doctor is killed by a knife, and this scene is watched by both of them. Both swear not to tell anybody about this tragic incident.

It was Dr. Robinson who was killed while performing as a magician. Robinson is killed by Injun Joe, and Muff Potter is blamed for this murder. 

Tom feels ashamed of this innocent Muff Potter being in jail. He speaks the truth during the interrogation procedure, and Potter is released.

Tom and his friend Huck believed Injun Joe had hidden some treasure. During their investigation, they found Injun Joe, transforming gold from one place to another. Tom chases them and learns that the treasure is hidden in the cave.

Tom and his friend Huck go into the cave, but they forget the return path. Both remained hungry for many days in the cave. After many days, they find a way to come out of the cave. 

Later on, they knew that Injun Joe was also present in the cave, but he met death due to hunger and thirst.

Tom and his friend Huck find out the treasure. Both get twelve thousand dollars and suddenly become rich in the town. Now his praise has started in the town. He is also respected by people who previously considered him a poor boy.

Theme and Analysis

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a reflection of childhood freedom and innocence. Tom leads his free life beyond social rules and barriers. He escapes from going to school and home rules.

 Home proves him like a lockup. It is the Mark Twain quality that presents the children’s intelligence, where there is no danger for them in any adventure.

The story criticizes social injustice and moral values. Tom’s town people claim to be legalistic, but they are full of hypocrisy. When Tom forgot the way to come out of the cave, people considered him dead. 

On the other hand, when he returns to town, he is welcomed warmly. It shows their attitude towards him has totally changed.

One aspect of this PDF book is friendship and trustworthiness. Huck belongs to a poor family, but he is committed and loyal to his friend Tom. 

Huck is ignored by his townspeople, but Tom believes and values his friendship, faithfulness, and courage. Their friendships and loyalty are free from jealousy. It shows human trust in faith.

Characters Analysis

Tom Potter:

Tom is the protagonist of the novel. He is a naughty and active child. He does not like traditional education and is fed up with social values. He makes his own way and earns respect. Being brave, he helps Muff Potter.

Huckleberry Finn:

Huck is a friend of Tom. Huck proves to be a faithful and strong boy. His father is drunk, and the town criticizes him. He shows his friendship and remains loyal to Tom when they are in the cave.

Becky Thatcher:

Becky Thatcher is a beautiful girl in the novel and the lover of Tom. She takes an interest in Tom’s love. Being a soft and kind-hearted girl, she is inspired by Tom’s making fun. In the cave, it shows her love and a strong relationship.

Injun Joe:

Injun Joe plays a negative role in the novel. He is a convicted murderer and a cruel man. At the beginning of the novel, he kills Robinson and blames Muff Potter. He becomes a danger to Tom Potter in the cave and finally meets death.
